SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS: “MANORS AT WAR”

ENCOUNTER conference 2024

The 8th ENCOUNTER conference will be taking place on June 13th – 15th 2024 in Espoo, Finland. With the theme “Manors at War” the conference will address questions regarding the role and fate of European manors during wartime. Manors have historically played an important role during the many periods of conflict across Europe – as strongholds, supply depots, prisons, training centres, headquarters, and hospitals forexample. During periods of occupation manors have usually fared badly at the hands of the invading army, and even sometimes at the hands of their own troops. Some manors, on the other hand, owe their existence to the riches acquired by their owners in wartime.

Call for papers

In which ways did wartime shape manorial heritage? How did manors function during wartime? How do manor museums deal with the dark heritage of war? – the theme of the conference invites many questions and papers touching on all aspects regarding war and manorial heritage are welcomed.
