New book about Norwegian Manor or Country House Museums

A recent book sheds light on the development of Norwegian manor- and country house museums since the mid-1800s. The cultural heritage of aristocracy has been difficult to include into the grand narrative of what constituted the “Norwegian”. However, in the early 20th century manors and country houses were attributed aesthetic and architectural historical value as cultural monuments. This raised an interest in developing some of them into museums.

This book describes how the manor museums have managed to find their place in the larger landscape of Norwegian museums. It also addresses challenges and future opportunities for these museums.

The release is based on a research project funded by Arts Council Norway and the participating museums in the years 2019-2021.
