From manuscript to digital cultural heritage: Perspectives on special collections

In November 2023, a seminar on special collections was held at the Swedish National Heritage Board in Stockholm. The event was co-organized by the Library of the Swedish Academy of Letters and Uppsala University Library. A new volume, “Från handskrift till digitalt kulturarv: Perspektiv på specialsamlingar”, brings together seven essays based on presentations from the seminar. Each essay explores current issues and research perspectives on special collections in Swedish institutions.

The contributions cover a wide range of topics, including studies of medieval Latin manuscripts and the challenges of provenance research, examinations of private book collections, and analyses of institutional holdings. Together, these essays illuminate the intersection of preservation, access, and interpretation in today’s special collections.

Some essays focus specifically on collections or manuscripts from Swedish manors, such as Henning Hansen’s contribution, “Oxenstiernska familjebibeln i Vitterhetsakademiens bibliotek,” which examines the circumstances surrounding a Bible owned by the renowned Swedish noble family Oxenstierna for generations. The volume’s subject matter may also appeal to specialists in manor houses and noble family archives more broadly.
