Sensing Europe's Court Spaces at the Crossroads of Past, Present and Future

This new four-year interdisciplinary network brings together researchers, heritage professionals, and digital humanities experts from across Europe to explore the multisensory worlds of medieval and early modern European court residences (c. 1300–1800).

At the heart of SENSES is a shared curiosity about how past societies experienced the court environment through all the senses — from the everyday sounds and smells of kitchens and domestic spaces to the rich visual, musical, and tactile rituals of ceremony and performance. By re-thinking these historic spaces not just as architectural monuments, but as lived sensory environments, our Action aims to illuminate how people in past centuries perceived, used, and interacted with their surroundings.

SENSES fosters collaboration across disciplines and countries to develop new research perspectives and innovative interpretive tools for European heritage.Through networking, training, and shared initiatives, the Action aims to deepen scholarly understanding while also making Europe’s courtly past more accessible and meaningful for contemporary audiences.

The SENSES COST Action CA24164 is excited to encourage young researchers and early-career scholars to make the most of the funding opportunities available through the network.

Whether you want to build collaborations, expand your research horizons, join inspiring academic events, or become more involved in the international SENSES community, the Action’s grants are designed to help you do exactly that. Find all infomation here: https://cost-senses.eu/grants/
